Inauteriak 2015

Sad to say I missed out on the anything-goes, DIY, hyper participatory inauteriak (carnaval) celebrations that take place in Tolosa this year, but Lasarte and Donostia did have their own blowouts. I hope to at some point travel farther afield to see some of the customs in the smaller towns. Given that this festival takes place along the Atlantic Coast in February, there is unfailingly a lot of rain. Rio it ain't. But that's what clear plastic ponchos are for.

Most family/social group floats play loud electronica/pop music, e.g. All About the Base, any reggaeton, and (oddly) techno pan flute music (that was a Bolivian social group). This float was blaring opera.

If you have to tolerate living right next to the main town square, you may as well do it up come festival time.
Ali Baba's cave of 40 thieves and a group of Pippi Longstockings.

Asterisk and Obelisk are very popular cartoons in Europe. A number of their movies are available on YouTube.
Donostia's celebrations are highly choreographed, elaborate, loud, and to be frank, a little lame. This is a very elaborate model of the city. Let it not be said that Donostiarrak are ever less than satisfied with themselves, given that they (as any one of them will tell you) live in the most beautiful city in the world.
